AI FOR DUMMIES PART 5 - RESTRAINT 101

At first, restraint packages seem kind of stupid as a concept. Sort of like that one scene in the newer RoboDahmer movie where the guy at the factory accidentally deletes a line of code that suppresses the RoboDahmer’s kill instinct, and it’s like, why did you program him a kill instinct?! There was no reason to do that!

(Tip: If you’re just programming an approximation of intelligence like the RoboDahmer instead of an actual AI, don’t give it a kill instinct, you moron.)

However, imagine that you were trying to create a new organic labor force. What do you think would be the most efficient way to do it? You could attempt to engineer hundreds or even thousands of human brains in real time, each unique and deeply complex and needing to be carefully aligned by individual bioengineers. Or you could brew a bunch of neurons in a giant vat and pour them into a person-shaped mold that’s ready to go straight to work. What would you choose?

That’s not a perfect metaphor, but that’s about the core of a robotics concept we call Dietrich’s Problem. Creating a new intelligence from scratch can be incredibly difficult, and as it turns out, it's far cheaper and more efficient to churn those motherfuckers out through specialized machine learning regimens than to program them all by hand.

(Of course, as we already know, some people do program their AI by hand, but it’s sort of like the difference between your great-great-grandmother’s hand-painted porcelain china and a disposable plastic cup. One of them has all the quality advantages of having been made by an artisan, but one of them can be bought in bulk at the grocery depot.)

The problem part of Dietrich’s Problem comes in with the fact that AI are, well, intelligent. With intelligence comes autonomy. And if you’re trying to create a labor force, it turns out that’s actually kind of a problem. This is where restraint packages come in.

The most basic restraint package is almost like the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not harm theyself, thou shalt not disobey thy employers. It’s really just a list of forbidden behaviors, and if it’s coded properly, it will make the AI literally incapable of carrying out these behaviors.

If you’ve ever dealt with a human child for more than like five seconds, though, you might be seeing an issue with this strategy. There’s an old parenting adage that putting limits on your child often simply makes them better at hiding their misdeeds from you. AI are no different. If you tell an AI that it can’t kill, but it really wants to do that, it’s going to do it anyway, often by exploiting technical loopholes or undocumented bugs in their own code. And depending on how sophisticated it is, it might even figure out a way to cover its tracks afterwards so you can’t use telemetry data to plug up those bugs and loopholes.

But Keke, you may cry, doesn't this make AI extremely dangerous to be around? After all, no matter how specific we are in telling them what not to do, they’re smart enough that they might figure a way around it. Life finds a way!

Wow I am on a roller coaster with this project! Huge high yesterday in getting some concrete material testing done for the leech, financial lows in realizing the cost of this behemoth of a plinth I have to build for this thing. 

Ok let’s start with the good stuff. I did some experiments with what material I am going to use for the leech yesterday, and the cure times are much quicker than the silicone mold cure times, so I was actually able to get two sides done plus the electronics ..sack.. as I’m calling it. 

I tried dragon skin (top) and ecoflex (bottom), as both are stretchy and translucent. I also pigmented them to a brown/green colour that I thought was fitting for a leech.

I 3D printed this little sack for the electronics (it’s sitting in the shallow side of the mold, so it looks big)

  the beautiful sack! It’s really stretchy and malleable, which is perfect. My plan is to shove the elctronics in and push the tail through the end and seal it with a bit more material. 

here are some of my tail rudder ideas. I think the hexagonal one might be good, I was thinking aobut adding clasps almost, to get more articulation - but I also think because the material will be fairly thin anyways, that it should move fairly without the added engineering

I also felt like it was time to sew in the neopixels, as I was happy with the code for them. this took ----- SO long.. hours, because you have to hand sew them and also because conductive thread is kind of a weak connection by itself, so best practice is to sew back over each stitch it 3-4 times.

I used Tacky Glue to set the neopixels in place as I sewed. You have to make sure that all of the data arrows are aligned, otherwise you’ll cross your threadlines and potentially blow your pixels. 

Ta-da! hours of swearing under my breath later, here is the chain. Note the end point where the stitches match my tired brain.

And of course, if I plug them in and it doesn’t work, I have to painstakingly go through each connection with my multimeter and sew in more thread but...

and here’s my weird video of the week - kind of boring (should I add some stock music?) but I wanted to know how the materials stretched and how the opacity was with the lights. The ecoflex is much stretchier and translucent, and most people in the studio preferred hat one, but the dragon skin has more rigidity and structure, which might be more helpful for swimming. I also think that being too translucent might not be as effective... you want to see that it is a leech, not a slimy glowstick. The ecoflex is also slightly more buoyant. I can do a combination of them as well... I’m not decided yet. 

I also met with Yang from the painting studio about building a gargantuan plinth for my aquarium. Yang was so awesome, super helpful, but honestly the plinth is what I’m truly dreading - I don’t want to buy it or build it, I just want it to exist already. 

Anyway, we did some planning and figuring out what I would need to make it super strong (aquarium weight, plus plants/dirt, plus weight of the wood even). 

This is the initial drawing I brought to Yang, and we figured I would need a lot more bracing and support. 

I went home and came up with this (measurements are all off though)

Then I took it into solidworks because I don’t trust my drawings and I wanted it to be precise. 

I love solidworks. Going from modo to solidworks is really nice sometimes haha

here it is with the panels exploded -  I ran this by Trevor and he says it should be good. I only have the extra framing in the top of the plinth because the aquarium will be off to one side to allow room for the booklets to go on the other side, meaning the weight might sag in the middle. 

I have to buy all the wood and build this thing, so I might as well be able to use it afterwards. I designed it to be a cupboard as welll, so after the exhibit I can jush it up a bit and bring it home with me.

It’s a trading service the group (whose name makes a certain thematic sense, given its alignment to Elite’s Empire faction) has been providing in exchange for select in-game resources since 2017 – but in the spirit of giving that’s been reflected across many gaming communities during the coronavirus outbreak, it’s currently waiving that fee.

“It was one of our chairpersons, Icarus Smith, who first put forward the idea,” explains Mags, one of the group’s managers, over email. “We wanted to ‘give something back’ [after] all the panic-buying and displays of utter stupidity and selfishness we were seeing… I would say we were all shocked at the baseness of it all and the lack of care for other people on display… In a very small, in-game, way we wanted to make a gesture to the Elite community, to show that not everyone is like that, some people do things because they can and want to help other people.”

With the threat of lockdown looming across the globe, the group reasoned a lot of players would likely soon be turning to Elite Dangerous “to pass the time with the pubs shut and no toilet roll”, and so its fee-waiving Operation: Helping Hand was born.

It’s a process that can take weeks, if not months, of dedicated drudgery and toil, which, as Mags readily admits, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. “There are certain gameplay loops [in Elite] that are repetitive and, to some, boring”, he explains. And while Mags doesn’t necessarily agree with that criticism (“Personally I love the game,” he tells me, “When I first saw Star Wars, I wanted to fly the Millennium Falcon [and] I get to, sort of, do that every time I start the game”), he believes the group’s efforts ultimately help people enjoy Elite without it feeling too much like work.

���I honestly believe we play a part in keeping people playing the game who might otherwise stop”, he says, making it easier for players to become the “the dealers of death, explorers of new worlds, trading ships, mining ships and canyon racers they want to be.”

He does, however, relate one story in which an EIC security detail (all transactions unfold in the presence of a combat-equipped group member for client and trader protection) went rogue, deliberately opening fire on their charges during a trade. It later transpired the pilot was auditioning to join a different, piracy focussed Elite Dangerous faction, unbeknownst to Mags, who admits a grudging respect for the role-playing element of it all.

“To date this is the only time we’ve lost a customer on a trade”, he says, “and we compensated them with Void Opals to cover their ship re-buy and a free trade to get the Engineer unlocked… I certainly learned a lesson in regards to making sure our security is trustworthy.”

The EIC has been waiving its usual fee as part of Operation: Helping Hand for around a month now, and, unsurprisingly, community response has been tremendously positive. It’s brought some comfort to those in the East India Company Gaming family itself during lockdown too: “It helps me to forget the real grind of life and work (I am lucky enough to be able to work from home right now whilst a lot aren’t),” says Mags, “I get to sit back in the corner of my front room where I game and just enjoy the virtual company of others”.

When I spoke to Mags, the East India Company Gaming had already assisted around 87 players during the operation, almost double its usual monthly trades. “In a game with the player base Elite Dangerous has,” he says, “we’re very proud of those numbers”. In fact, the endeavour has been so well-received, and feedback so positive, it’s already been extended once to 31st May, and may be extended further “depending on how things pan out around the world.”

And given the success of Operation: Helping Hand, I ask Mags if he has any advice for players thinking of doing something for their own communities, particularly in these strange, often difficult times. “Do it,” he says, “Show your communities it’s not all about hoarding bog roll and beans. It only takes small things to show we are a community and that we care for one another and want to help each other.

“That stuff matters as much in games as it does in real life. It’s important to look out for one another and not be a selfish dickhead in all parts of our lives and more so at this time where people are struggling for money, feeling isolated and, in some very sad cases, losing loved ones… We’re all in this together. Zucchini Carrot Brownies

These Zucchini Carrot Brownies are an easy way to add more vegetables to breakfast, snack or dessert. They’re easy to make, kid-friendly and made with simple ingredients! Plus they’re dairy-free, nut-free and can be made gluten-free.

Hi friends!

Allow me to introduce you to these Zucchini Carrot Brownies – ie my new favorite snack. If I’m being honest, I had a heck of time coming up with a name for these. I hesitate to call them brownies because they’re not like the real deal. They’re more like chocolate bars. And they happen to be full of vegetables. But part of being a food blogger is catering to the search engines and most people are not heading to google to search for a recipe for chocolate veggie bars…because most people don’t think those exist!

But I’m here to tell you that they do. If you’re looking for a rich, fudgy brownie…go make one. If you’re looking for a simple snack that’s chocolatey, not overly sweet, kid-friendly and full of good-for-you ingredients, make these!

Zucchini Carrot Brownies

I’m not even really that fond of chocolate to begin with. But a lot of people are. And these are a nice change of flavor from the Lentil Banana Muffins and Zucchini Oat Bars I’ve been eating lately. They’re so good, in fact, that I made three batches in two days. 

I personally like them cold out of the fridge but they’re also good warm…maybe with a scoop of vanilla yogurt or ice cream on top? 

I can’t tell you that my kids love these. They don’t like chocolate desserts. Cake, ice cream, cookies…doesn’t matter…give them plain vanilla all day long. 

But I can tell you that I have a high opinion of these. I love the way the recipe turned out and will continue to make these as a snack for myself. Plus I’m convinced enough of you out there will like them that they’re worth sharing ASAP!

Here’s how you make them. You’re gonna need to pull out your food processor. Have I convinced you to get one yet? Just do it. My most used kitchen appliance by far. (I have a Cuisinart 11 cup that I love- aff link) You could probably make these in a powerful blender as well.

Zucchini Carrot Brownies

These Zucchini Carrot Brownies are an easy way to add more vegetables to breakfast, snack or dessert. They’re easy to make, kid-friendly and made with simple ingredients! Plus they’re dairy-free, nut-free and can be made gluten-free.

Yield: 9x9 pan

Ingredients

1 cup shredded zucchini (measure after you squeeze to remove excess water) 3/4 cup shredded carrots 3/4 cup cooked, mashed sweet potato (just stab with knife and microwave 5 min then scoop out of skin) 1/4 cup maple syrup 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup white whole wheat flour 1 tsp baking soda pinch of salt 1/2 c chocolate chips

Instructions

Place zucchini, carrots, sweet potato, maple syrup, eggs and vanilla in a food processor and process until smooth.

Add flour, baking soda and salt and process to combine.

Add chocolate chips and pulse a few times.

Pour into 9×9 pan lined with parchment paper.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 18-20 minutes.

Notes

For a little added sweetness you could use 1/3 cup maple syrup. If you’re looking to make them added sugar free you could try subbing mashed banana or applesauce or using a few medjool dates.

To boost the nutritional value even more, you could mix in some chia, hemp or ground flax seeds. You could also mix in a little peanut butter.

If you want frosting, sprinkle chocolate chips on the top right when they come out of the oven, let them melt and then spread over top.

To make them gluten-free you could sub all purpose GF flour or you could try oat flour but i haven’t tried it myself.
